Twins Navigate Pitching Shuffle: Rojas Injured, Laweryson Returns
The Minnesota Twins are dealing with a bit of a shake-up in their pitching staff. A recent report highlights some quick roster moves, with rookie Kendry Rojas landing on the injured list and the team calling up fresh arms to fill the gaps.
Let’s take a closer look at what these changes might mean for the Twins’ pitching approach as the season rolls on.
Rookie Sensation Rojas Hits a Speed Bump
It’s always tough when a young pitcher runs into injury trouble, and that’s exactly what’s happened with Kendry Rojas. The 23-year-old lefty, who many see as the Twins’ top pitching prospect, went on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday, because of elbow inflammation.
Rojas felt soreness during warmups, which forced him to miss his scheduled start on Thursday. The team made the roster move official on Friday, putting a pause on what was shaping up to be a pretty exciting rookie campaign.
Rojas’s rise to the big leagues happened fast. He made his debut on April 22nd and wasted no time making an impression.
In five games this season—split between two stints with the Twins—he’s posted a sharp 1-0 record and a stingy 1.26 ERA. It’s easy to see why fans are disappointed by this setback, considering how much buzz Rojas created right out of the gate.
Adams Optioned, Laweryson Reinstated to Fill the Void
In addition to the Rojas news, the Twins made another roster move. They optioned right-hander Travis Adams to their Triple-A affiliate, St. Paul, right after Thursday’s game in Chicago.
Adams recently appeared in five games. He put up a 1-0 record, grabbed a save, but also gave up five runs.
The team noticed his contributions, but they’ve decided to shift the roster around. They’re clearly looking for a different mix.
To fill the gaps from Rojas’s injury and Adams’s move, the Twins brought in more pitching depth. Right-hander Cody Laweryson is back from the 15-day injured list after a solid rehab assignment.
Laweryson jumps right onto the 26-man roster. That’s got to feel good for him, and the bullpen could use the help.
They also recalled left-hander Kody Funderburk from Triple-A St. Paul. With Funderburk back, they’ve got another arm ready to chew up innings if things get weird.
It’s always a bit of a chess match managing a roster over a long season. Injuries pop up, guys get hot or cold, and the front office has to keep shuffling the deck. Right now, the Twins are just trying to hold things together and keep their momentum going.
